Carlsberg Byen: Retail development plan

The life between the buildings is a large and important part of Carlsberg Byen. Read more about the visions for the area here.

Shops, restaurants and city life is a large and important part of creating a new, successful city district, and there are four cornerstones in particular which will help to build Copenhagen's new district, Carlsberg Byen:

HISTORY
Carlsberg’s history is a love affair between science and culture. From the very beginning, quality products went hand in hand with a good head of creative energy and a generous contribution to life in the city. Great art and architecture were integrated into urban spaces and thus into everyday life. On town squares and in old as well as new buildings, forces are now joining to create a dynamic city district. Global trade and art, popular tradition and research will be brought together on one of Copenhagen’s finest foundations.

URBAN LIFE - MULTIPLICITY AND DIVERSITY
Carlsberg Byen will be a genuine child of Copenhagen; well intertwined with its neighbours, but with its own unique identity. Every feature of the city district will generate life and vitality. Intense yet peaceful. Crazy yet mundane. The district will have a clear international orientation, but it will also have its own unique position in culture and heritage. A rich environment for the arts will unite with cultural and age diversity as well as vibrant commerce to create an attractive and safe district. Carlsberg Byen will be used and developed by people whose dream is to see more Copenhagen in Copenhagen.

THE URBAN SPACES
It will be a denser, more massive district than Copenhagen has seen for a century. Historical buildings, modern blocks and no less than nine towers will rise to the skies. On the ground, a varied pattern of passages and squares will inspire people to explore and discover the myriad of spaces and atmospheres. Each of the 25 urban spaces will serve as a unique social scene, with its own special message and openness to change. Everywhere, focus will be on experience and functional frameworks for spontaneity, always bearing in mind the aesthetic.

HERITAGE AND IDENTITY
Carlsberg Byen will build on a unique cultural heritage, and this will live on in the city. The values of history will guide life in the new city, and every visitor will experience the link between the power of history and the dynamics of a living city. The characteristic architecture, the beautiful gardens and axial designs will create a feeling of grandeur, while cultural, commercial and recreative activities will complement the promises of history. Like the joy of art, science and research are a manifest heritage from the founders. The researcher apartments, the educational institutions and the production units will ensure that Carlsberg Byen continues along the path set by its founders.

Franciska Clausens Plads: The meeting place -

Zone 1: This zone is the centre of the district, and with its iconic buildings and the planned activities, the square will be a meeting place for everything that Carlsberg Byen represents. Due to its combination of cafés and bars, a roof-top restaurant, cultural activities and the location itself, the square will become the new meeting place in the city district, with public seating and several naturally inviting urban spaces.

Bryggernes Plads and Ottilia Jacobsens Plads: The activity zone -

Zone 2: This zone basically consists of two urban spaces, each with its own strengths and character. Ottilia Jacobsens Plads will serve as a kind of oasis and a mental space in which water trickling from the spring will stimulate reflection and contemplation. As a contrast to this, Bryggernes Plads is intended as a large open space offering a venue for numerous events and activities throughout the year. More about Bryggernes Plads (in Danish)

Pasteursvej: International perspectives and art

Zone 3: This zone comprises the Kridttårnet building, the block of flats by Pasteurs Tårn as well as Mineralvandsfabrikken. The intention is that conceptual development should be based on Carl Jacobsen’s idea of making art available to all. Consequently, potential tenants will be required to design their universe with this goal in mind. The experience should be the closest you can get in Carlsberg Byen to an international High Street.

Købkes Plads og Thorvald Bindesbølls Plads: Play and activities

Zone 4: This zone will accommodate the activity area, for e.g. skateboarding, table tennis and various events, as well as the Halmlageret which houses an fitness. The urban spaces will serve as an open and vibrant environment, inviting people to further explore the city district, welcomed by stalls and booths. More about Thorvald Bindesbølls Plads (in Danish)

Bag Elefanterne: Beer, food and interior design -

Zone 5: This zone will be the entrance to the district from Frederiksberg and Valby. With its architectural splendour and the beautiful back facade of Bryghuset, the old brewery building, this will be the ideal place to focus on gastronomy and beer production. In collaboration with various operators, customised concepts can be designed to supplement the narrative about the area. At Ny Carlsberg Vej the focus will be on shopping experiences. Tapperitorvet and Humletorvet: Transit, shopping and short visit -

Zone 6: In addition to the two busy squares, this zone comprises the Københavns Professionshøjskole Campus, the offices in Humlehuset and the flats in the Bohrs Tårn tower block. The zone has been developed, devised and established as a transit and station area, where users arrive and travel to their place of study, stop for a break, make impulsive purchases, shop for groceries, drink coffee and meet up before taking awalk through Carlsberg Byen. Kildepladsen: The Green Community

Zone 7: The green space with good opportunities for living, outdoor dining and relaxation is the focal point for Kildepladsen. The individual tenants will together develop a commercially sustainable concept, which, based on its quiet location, is primarily aimed at the local population in Carlsberg Byen, Humleby and Vesterbro. Sustainability and general green attitude will ensure an environment with the opportunity for visibility.

Flaskehalsen: The Design Community

Zone 8: The area will be a meeting point for lifestyle and design in a new and groundbreaking universe. Visitors can choose to either enter Flaskehalsens stræde or move to the outside, as there are shops with access from both sides. The commercial area creates a sense of intimacy and presence. Kedelpladsen: The Dining Hall -

Zone 9: With its location on the corner of Bohrsgade close to Kedelhallen, the zone will be absolutely central to the experience in the city. Marketenderi was the historical name for the place where food and drinks were sold in Carlsberg Byen. In Marketenderiet it is all about food and good ingredients. Here comes a universe where learning about food and cultures is central to food markets and large stores with kitchen equipment from around the world for professionals and individuals.

Gærtorvet: The gate to Vesterbro

This zone will be the entrance from Vesterbro and Humleby and is expected to become an important hub for the natural flow of visitors into Carlsberg Byen. The intention is that Gærtorvet, together with the Bag Elefanterne area will be the part of the city district most naturally integrated with the rest of Copenhagen. With its square facing east towards the sunrise, this is an obvious place to start a new day.
